How to lose weight on bupropion

Has anyone gained or lost weight on BUPROPION XL 300mg (generic for W0ELLBUTRIN) ?

I was on Citalopram 40mg for 2 years and gained a total of 40 lbs. My doctor switched me to wellbutrin xl 150 mg but I saw no difference in my weight so she just upped my dose to 300mg. It has worked wonders with my anxiety though, as did the citalopram, but the weight gain and uncontrolled hunger was making me depressed. Please help πŸ™

I’d like to call your attention to recent FDA news. If the link doesn’t work you’ll find this article and more in the search engine for this site and others. I personally did not lose or gain significant weight during the years I took Wellbutrin. My weight was a bit high, but pretty stable. Hope you find the answers you need:

Hi 4N Substances,

I just read the article, thank you so much! I’m gonna see if my insurance covers the Wellbutrin, I don’t want it for weight loss, I just want a pill that will help with my panic attacks and anxiety without making me gain a substantial amount of weight. It’s a difficult struggle to go through what we go through, but its nice to know I’m not alone in this, and its also comforting to know that there are good people out there that understand how it feels πŸ™‚

As a professional I never prescribe Wellbutrin or it’s generic form buproprion for anxiety or panic attacks as it can make the condition increase greatly. The medication may seem like it helps at first but in the long run it is not an acceptable treatment for anxiety with panic attacks! bupropion has been founded to exacerbate anxiety (make worse in case you were unsure of what it meant.

You’re most welcome brighid-anytime! Please keep us posted. You are definitely among caring friends on this site. Hope you’re soon feeling much better.

How is it going for you? I am a big fan of Wellbutrin, and I take 300mg every morning. My doctor prescribed it to me to balance out the sexual side effects and weight gain of Zoloft. It worked. I was off the meds for about a year. When I went back on, initially it was just Wellbutrin. My appetite was gone and my sex drive increased tremendously!! I am taking it with Viibryd now. Appetite normal, normal sex drive. I wish I didn’t need the anti-anxiety meds because I LOVE Wellbutrin’s side effects. However, it “plays well” with those drugs since it counteracts the bad side effects (no weight gain!), at least for me. I love that my psychiatrist cares about treating all of me, not just the anxiety. Many doctors just want patients to deal with the side effects on their own. Hope this was helpful, and I’d love to hear how the drug is affecting you.

I started taking bupropion about 5 week in notice weight loss , but notice anxiety have not change, no drive for sex and cant keep it up to long, will continue until I don’t see no changes , very depress because my sex drive out temporary

i love talking the medication because it is making me lose the weight i want but the only down fall that i have is i have major headaches and my sex drives decreased to where i can care less about it and it drives my husband crazy lol but other than that it has help me with my depression . i started off with 150mg and she just put me on 300mg and its alot better

Take Bupropion XL 300MG
I have gained 20 lbs

Hi Linda: Your comment-“Take Bupropion XL 300MG
I have gained 20 lbs” .
I think the original question (even though it is a very old post) was showing that the person asked, what she was saying – she did not want to gain weight with Wellbutrin after gaining weight with Citalopram. She doesn’t want to take Wellbutrin if others are gaining weight on it! That is how I perceive what she is asking. You are telling her that you gained 20 pounds and you think she should take Bupropion XL 300mg? I don’t think that is what she wants, more weight gain?

I absolutely did not say she should take this drug.
I said I gained 20 lbs taking this. I would not recommend it to anyone.

Sorry, Linda, I misunderstood when your comment started with this– “Take Wellbutrin XL 300mg”. Thanks for clarifying.

I realize this post is slightly old but I wanted to respond for anyone who is checking online to see if generic Wellbutrin can cause weight gain. The answer for me was YES!! I took it to quit smoking and was slowly putting on weight. I wanted to eat all of the time and I was also having mood swings and break outs. After I realized that it might be the medication, I started to research online. I had been told it was not a weight gaining medication so I hadn’t even considered it. I called my doctor and asked to switch to name brand Wellbutrin. I didn’t want to quit altogether because I had quit smoking and was managing that aspect. She agreed to prescribe but then there was the cost; $1200 every three months, with insurance. More research. you can order name brand medication from Canada for a fraction of the price! I got three months worth for $230.

The difference between the generic and name brand is night and day for me. Immediately I stopped feeling the urge to binge eat. Two weeks in to the new medication and I’ve dropped 2 of the 10 pounds I gained, my acne cleared up and I feel like myself again! Most importantly, I’m five months smoke free!!

nicponk: Good news for you! Unfortunately , where I live, name brand Wellbutrin would cost me $1389.00/month. A little too steep for my pocketbook! By the way, are you talking about Wellbutrin SR or Wellbutrin XL?
Big difference in the two for me!

Hi Nicponk, when you took the generic wellbutrin was it bupropion 150xl and what company makes this med. Also, for the brand wellbutrin was it 150xl and what company made this med. I will be starting soon on the generic bupropion 150xl made by Cipla. If this does not work; I will try the brand wellbutrin 150xl made by Valeant. It will cost me $140.00 for 3 months supply by my insurance if I go to the brand wellbutrin. They say mfr or the companies that makes bupropion and wellbutrin makes a big difference in how you feel and weight loss/gain. I have tried bupropion 100 SR (2x’s a day) made by Sandoz for 2 months only the 1st 3 days I was full of energy and laughing and after that it did nothing for me except gained about 8 lbs. I hope in trying the company Cipla works well.
Gee P

The Wellbutrin website has a coupon you can print from their website to help with or without insurance. I have heard it can cost as low as nothing or $5 with the coupon and insurance. I haven’t tried using it yet, but I will. I have been on generic 150mg XL for 3 weeks, and appetite is slightly less but barely noticeable. I’m going to switch to 300mg XL, but want to use the brand due to all the negative comments I’ve read on the Web about generic.

ALWAYS LOST WEIGHT. I gained 30+ lbs on Cymbalta after stopping Wellbutrin XL 300 mg. So now I am weaning myself off Cymbalta and adding Wellbutrin back in.

I have been taking generic bupropion xl since about last August, it is now December and I’ve gone from 190 pounds to 164 pounds without any change in lifestyle except the fact I’m not as hungry so I eat smaller portions. it is working great for me and I have 4 girlfriends taking the same thing that have all lost alot of weight too. everybody is different.

I am Glad To Hear Someone is Doing Good On this Drug My Doc Just Gave It To Me! I Can’t wait To Start It! Did you Have Any Side Affects?

Great News! And No Side Affects!! I Love It.

I started taking Wellbutrin XL 150 mg in September of 2015 and in January of 2017 it was increased to 300 mg. Since I have started taking it, I have lost 80 pounds. However; I gained 5 pounds back over Christmas break. Three pounds of it will come back and go away. I was wondering if I have plateaued out on this? I’m not sure if there is a dosage higher than 300 mg. It has made a huge impact for me mentally and physically. I previously took Lexapro for 3 years, which I suspect is why I gained so much weight to begin with.

Yes I have I too have similar issues and had to stop and crawl back under my shell.. it’s sad to think such a wonderful remedy has such bizarre side effects ohh lord.

Hi there,
Just want to let you know that wellbutrin XL @300mg or more generally will cause weight loss. As with anything else, you must be consistent with it. do not skip doses. Wellbutrin also improves your energy levels and lessens your appetite in general. However, please note that no two people have the same response. Good Luck!

Been on Wellbutrin since July 2017. Started at 159mg then to 300mf January. So then, I guess it works different for everyone bc I’ve lost lots of weight and can’t get it back and yet I pig out at times too! (good food for the most part) I have to tell myself to eat most of the time bc it takes away my appetite. Then sometimes when I am a little hungry I take advantage and eat lots and I think “ok I’ll be up a couple pounds tomorow bc I ate so much today” but I’m not I’m the same. It’s crazy I’m trying to gain weight this time around than lose it? I can’t stand to lose anymore weight bc I’m 5’5” and down to 120 lbs. I like myself at 125-130 but can’t seem to achieve that – I’m trying to build some muscle now to put on a couple pounds.
Does anybody know what componite is in this Wellbutrin that is causing weight loss??

Also it gives me anxiety and twitches when I’m nervous or at rest or thinking. mostly on my left side.
I take it for deep depression and it did the trick for that but not good for anxiety at all.
I know this is not an SSRI so apparently that’s why I’m not gaining weight on it – but really I don’t know the difference between the 2? Can anyone also tell me the difference please?
Hope this helps.

I Just Started Taking Bupropion XL I am Taking it to help Me Lose Weight! I wanted to know What People Side Affects Are! I would Love To Lose 20 Pounds! I Exercise And Watching My Diet! I also Have Diabetes It Makes It Hard To Lose! Thank You!!

I just picked up my prescription for 150 bupropion XL. I am going to take it to lose weight also. I am just wondering if you have had any side effects and if you have lost any weight. Thank you

Hi, I know this post is old but I thought I would share my experience with this drug. I was put on Wellbutrin by my doctor to help me quit smoking and with anxiety. I started taking it back in Dec of 2016 it work wonderful for me I’m a nonsmoking now. I have lost 25lbs and still don’t have a appetite it’s almost like I have to remind myself eat. It works for weight loss. I put on some weight going though the change of life and now I think I need to stop Wellbutrin. I never thought I would say this but now I’m getting to thin. I hear different story’s it helps some and not others with the weight loss part.

I was on Celexa for 2 years 20 msg twice a day. My Dr switched me to Bupropion XL 150 in the Am and the Celexa 20 at night. Since my change in the middle of January 2018, I have gained 12 pounds! I am not happy! I had Gastric Bypass in 2000, this is very devastating to me. It has helped me with my depression, but I will go right back into a different type if I continue to be so hungry, and watch the scale go up. I don’t want to go back to making myself vomit like I did once before. So needless to say when I see my Dr. In June we will be changing to something else!

Wellbutrin XL and Weight Loss

Clinical studies on Wellbutrin XL and weight loss showed that up to 23 percent of people taking it lost weight. Although it is not entirely clear why this occurs, it is thought that other side effects of the medication (such as loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting) may be factors. Also, when treating depression with Wellbutrin XL, weight loss may occur when the depression symptom of weight gain is resolved.

Antidepressants That Cause Weight Loss: Wellbutrin Is Best

Most people that are depressed end up trying antidepressants. One major problem associated with these medications is that while they may alleviate depression, they can cause people to gain a significant amount of weight. Due to the weight gain associated with SSRIs, people are searching for alternatives so that they don’t become fat from taking a medication.

Although minor weight gain is certainly favorable to feeling suicidal and depressed, some people gain more than just a few pounds. The weight gain can create an entirely new self-image problem for the person. Gaining weight may cause a person to lose confidence and actually may contribute to them feeling depressed again.

It is estimated that people gain up to 10 pounds following a 6 month treatment with common antidepressants. So you are probably wondering which antidepressants are linked to weight loss? I’m going to breakdown the drugs that are associated with weight loss as well as those that tend to be “weight neutral” meaning a person won’t gain or drop a significant amount of weight while taking the drug.

Antidepressants that cause weight loss: Wellbutrin (Bupropion)

There is really only one of the popular antidepressants these days that is linked to weight loss. The medication that you’ll want if you want to actually lose weight is that of Wellbutrin. It will speed up your metabolism, and increase your energy. This is because it works as an NDRI (norpinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor). Really the only major unfortunate side effect is that you may feel increasingly anxious and you may not get much relief if your serotonin imbalance is the problem.

Wellbutrin (Bupropion) – Wellbutrin often suppresses appetite in certain individuals as well as gives them more energy for working out. This can be a good thing if the person is already overweight. This is a drug that is also used for some people who are clinically obese because it helps speed up their metabolism and gives them energy to do things. This drug also speeds up the metabolic system in your body – which will lead to increases in calories burned.

Other antidepressants that cause weight loss typically do not inhibit the reuptake of serotonin. So if your goal is to avoid gaining weight, you’ll usually want to find a drug that primarily affects norepinephrine and serotonin to a lesser degree. Wellbutrin is considered one of the safer antidepressants in comparison to most SSRI’s which are associated with difficult withdrawals.

Weight neutral antidepressants: SNRI’s + Viibryd

There are a few antidepressants that aren’t linked to weight gain or loss. Meaning that some people will gain weight on them, others will lose weight on them, and some will stay pretty much the same weight on them. These are SNRIs which work by preventing the reuptake of both serotonin and norepinephrine. Another antidepressant that should be mentioned is that of Viibryd – a newer medication. Many people that take Viibryd tend to lose weight simply because it acts as a great laxative – meaning diarrhea is a very common side effect.

Also just because these medications are medically regarded as being “weight neutral” doesn’t mean you won’t gain or lose weight while taking them – they affect everyone differently. Some people may gain a significant amount of weight on any of these medications, while others may drop a few pounds.

Antidepressants that cause weight gain: SSRI’s

The SSRI (selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitor) class will cause most people to gain weight. Some have been suggested as being “worse” than others for weight. Many people regard Paxil as being the easiest to gain weight on, but there are cases of individuals gaining weight on all of these medications. Medications that are geared primarily towards preventing the reuptake of serotonin tend to yield more weight gain than other classes of drugs.

SSRIs tend to increase a person’s appetite while decreasing the individual’s metabolism. So no matter how healthy the person is eating and how much they are working out, they are going to pack on a few pounds. For more information, read “Antidepressants and Weight Gain.”

Best antidepressant for weight loss: Wellbutrin (Bupropion)

Although there are older antidepressants that may cause a person to lose weight, most are associated with weight gain with the exception of Wellbutrin. For this reason, if weight is a big concern, I would recommend trying this particular medication before others. It tends to have less side effects than other drugs and is easier tolerated. When it comes to losing weight from taking an antidepressant, this may contribute to improving your mood.

With that said, your goal shouldn’t be to get on Wellbutrin just to lose weight. This is a powerful drug that should be avoided unless you absolutely need it for depression. The weight loss is a secondary benefit that you may experience if you are overweight. Not everyone experiences weight loss even while taking Wellbutrin – everyone reacts differently to medications. Although extremely rare, some people have noticed weight gain on Wellbutrin.

Final thoughts: Antidepressants and weight fluctuation

Unless you can say that you are in peak physical condition before starting medication, you could lose or gain weight while on any medication. For example, take someone who is ridiculously obese, put them on an SSRI and let’s say it increases their energy level. If the SSRI works well and the person never exercised before and starts exercising, they are likely still going to lose weight.

Additionally someone who starts eating healthier and/or exercising while on an SSRI may actually experience weight loss if they never were healthy before the drug. Each situation is so unique and different that it’s impossible to know how you will be affected. Someone in peak physical shape may find that an SSRI makes them lazy and they may gain a decent amount of fat.

This is simply because when you are already in good shape with a lot of lean mass, and you are on an antidepressant, it’s going to throw your body out of homeostasis – making it harder to convert fat to muscle and maintain a high metabolism. The nice thing is that even if you do gain weight from an antidepressant, you will lose it relatively easily after you stop the medication.

I lost a lot of weight on Wellbutrin (20 tbs) and since I have quit taking it I have begun to have a major appetite. I am thinking of returning to the drug because although I felt a little ancy at times while on it. I didn’t eat as much (for no reason), and I am worried about my excessive appetite which is making my depression return. It is great for smokers who don’t want to put weight on and want to quit. I love that Wellbutrin gave me a diet plan too and now I miss the drug benefits (energy as well) that I am returning to it. Good luck to you, and I doubt that this pill will make you gain any weight. the jitters and significant weight loss taper off at around month.

I am currently on Wellbutrin XL and some of the symptoms are just out of the norm, and had me kinda antsy about using this. Although I am happy at the “Weight Loss” Side Effect, it had me wondering about of things..
and now that I see that there are other people on the site that are going through the same things.

Some of my side effects are:
Weight Loss
Decreased Appetite
Heart Palpitations
Jitteriness
Dry Mouth
Muscle Soreness
Minor Headaches

Please if you use this medication.. use it as a help, not a overdoser.
It’s very vital to the immune system, and to your central nervous system.
Please contact a doctor as soon as possible if you are unable to handle this medication.

Does Wellbutrin Work for Weight Loss?

Wellbutrin is a prescription antidepressant. Although it is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration for weight loss, some people believe that Wellbutrin may help you to lose weight. Educating yourself about weight loss and Wellbutrin will enable you to determine if Wellbutrin is likely to aid in your weight loss. Consult your physician prior to taking Wellbutrin or starting a weight loss diet.

Wellbutrin

Wellbutrin, the trade name for bupropion, is used to treat major depressive disorder by preventing the reuptake of dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine. Unlike Wellbutrin SR and Wellbutrin XL, Wellbutrin has a short half life and is typically administered three to four times per day. Common side effects of Wellbutrin include dry mouth, loss of appetite, headache, nausea, weight loss, dizziness, constipation and sweating. Wellbutrin must be administered every day for four to six weeks before the full therapeutic effect is present.

Weight Loss

Fat contains 3,500 calories per pound. Therefore, to lose 1 lb. of fat per week you must burn 500 calories more per day than you consume. This can be achieved by reducing your caloric consumption by 250 calories, which is equivalent to approximately one can of cola and one candy bar per day, and burning 250 calories through exercise, which a 160-lb. person can accomplish by walking 2 miles. According to “Handbook of Obesity Treatment,” gradual weight loss is best for long-term weight loss success.

Wellbutrin and Weight Loss

One belief is that because a common side effect of Wellbutrin is loss of appetite, Wellbutrin is effective in assisting you to reduce your caloric intake and lose weight, according to “Nutrition: Concepts and Controversies.” On the other hand, another belief is that Wellbutrin has a common side of effect of weight loss because it is effective in treating depression. Some people who suffer from depression self-medicate with food and become overweight. According to “Focus on Nursing Pharmacology,” weight loss occurs when people with depression who self-medicate with food are properly medicated with an antidepressant, such as Wellbutrin, because the depression, which caused the overeating, is treated.

Considerations

Wellbutrin is not FDA approved for weight loss and does not cause appetite loss in everyone. Wellbutrin is unlikely to be beneficial in assisting you to lose weight if you do not suffer from depression. However, if you do suffer from depression, you should speak with your doctor about your treatment options. As you treat your depression you will likely find that it is easier to exercise and you’re more motivated to care for your body by consuming a balanced, healthy diet.

How to Use Wellbutrin For Weight Loss & Who Should Use it

No doubt most of you have at least heard about Wellbutrin.

Most of you are probably familiar with its use as an anti-depressant, but did you know that it can also help with weight loss?

Or that it is actually compounded with another medication (naltrexone) and is part of one of the most popular weight loss medications currently available?

The answer to that is probably not, which is why we are going to discuss using Wellbutrin for weight loss here.

Let’s dig into how Wellbutrin helps with weight loss and determine if it’s right for you (because it certainly doesn’t work for everyone).

Does Wellbutrin Help with Weight Loss?

Just because a medication may help with weight loss doesn’t mean it actually does a good job.

When we talk about weight loss medications we always need to be asking the following questions:

1. How effective is the medication at causing weight loss?

2. Will the medication work for me or does it only work for certain people?

These questions are VERY important.

We could have a medication that works 100% of the time, but only causes 1-2 pounds of weight loss.

Or we could have a medication that helps people lose 20-40 pounds but only works in 20% of the population.

But why do we have such high variability between medications?

This has to do with HOW weight gain occurs, and it’s different for each person.

Hopefully, you understand that weight gain has more to do with your metabolic and hormone function than it does with how many calories you are consuming.

Yes, calories do matter – but they take a backseat to the influence that powerful weight altering hormones such as leptin and insulin.

Before we jump into how Wellbutrin helps with weight loss we need to discuss the basics:

First off, Wellbutrin is a medication most commonly prescribed to treat depression, anxiety, and certain eating disorders.

It’s also known by Bupropion (which is the generic version of Wellbutrin).

Wellbutrin exerts its influence on mood and weight by altering specific neurotransmitters and by acting as a norepinephrine and dopamine uptake inhibitor. (1)

Wellbutrin basically acts to increase the amount of adrenaline (norepinephrine) at the neurotransmitter synapse and it is likely through this influence that it helps modulate appetite and increase metabolism leading to weight loss.

With that in mind let’s answer the basic questions we mentioned previously:

How effective is Wellbutrin at helping with weight loss?

Most studies have shown that Wellbutrin is superior to placebo in helping with weight loss.

I’ve included a graph which outlines the relative effectiveness of various studies as they compare to placebo below:

You can see that in the studies listed, 4 of the 5 led to weight loss which was superior to placebo indicating that most of the time it is effective.

Individual studies (2) also tend to agree with this assessment.

This study showed that various doses of Wellbutrin were very well tolerated and were associated with a 24-week weight loss of 7.2% and 10.1% based on dose.

What’s also important is that this weight loss was sustained up to 48 weeks!

This study showed that Bupropion (Wellbutrin) was more effective than placebo in achieving weight loss at 8 weeks in obese and overweight adult women.

How to lose weight on bupropion

What’s interesting in this study is that certain patients were referred to as “initial responders” and these patients had more success long term than those who did not respond as quickly.

This concept brings us to our next question:

Will Wellbutrin help ME lose weight?

Not everyone will achieve weight loss by using Wellbutrin, in fact, there is a chance it simply won’t help you at all.

You should do your best to identify WHY you have gained weight, to begin with.

Is your thyroid functioning properly?

Do you have leptin resistance or insulin resistance?

Is your metabolism functioning optimally?

Are you peri-menopausal or post-menopausal?

If you’ve answered YES to any of the questions listed above then Wellbutrin is probably NOT the best weight loss medication for you.

It doesn’t mean it won’t work at all, it just means that Wellbutrin is not targeting the root cause of your weight gain and isn’t likely to lead to significant weight loss over time.

With that in mind let’s talk about who SHOULD use weight loss and who will benefit the most from using this medication.

Who should use Wellbutrin for Weight Loss?

If you have any of the following conditions then Wellbutrin may help you:

Wellbutrin and Weight Loss

People may experience side effects during treatment with Wellbutrin, and weight loss can be one of these side effects. In previous studies, up to 28 percent of people taking Wellbutrin lost more than five pounds. Although some people may benefit from weight loss, it can be a problem for others. Be sure to let your healthcare provider know if you are losing too much weight while taking Wellbutrin.
